Northwest Nazarene University, also known as simply NNU, is a private Christian liberal arts college located in Nampa, which is the largest and the fastest growing city in Canyon County, in the US state of Idaho, as well as the 2nd largest city in the state, having a population estimated at a number of more than 80 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census. The name ''Nampa'' comes from a Shoshone word whose meaning is either moccasin or footprint.
NNU was established in 1913, as Idaho Holiness School, which was renamed twice, in 1916, first to Northwest Holiness College and then to Northwest Nazarene College, the institution's current name being adopted in 1999. The university offers its students, who number today approximately 1900, baccalaureate programs in 29 areas and graduate programs in seven disciplines, through 6 schools, which include: Academic Resources (Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences), Education & Social Work, Business & Economics, Health & Science, and Theology & Christian Ministries.
NNU's athletic teams are known as the Crusaders, who compete in at the NCAA Division II level in 8 sports, including in baseball, basketball, golf, softball, cross country and volleyball. The teams' distinctive colors are red and black.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable NNU alumni, there are: Kent R. Hill - the current administrator for USAID's Bureau for Global Health and former president of the Eastern Nazarene College, Michael Lodahl and Thomas Jay Oord - noted Nazarene theologians, and Mildred Bangs Wynkoop (non-graduate alumna) - another noted Nazarene theologian.
